Dance is one of the five disciplines of the Expressive Arts Area of Learning and Experience – and is an artform that can be used to motivate and encourage learners to develop their creative, artistic and performance skills, as well as assisting coordination, numeracy and physical education.

We can help!

National Dance Company Wales are Wales’ experts in dance and want to share that knowledge with the nations teachers so that everyone has the chance to dance.
NDCWales is teaming up with legendary choreographer Lea Anderson MBE who is known for brilliantly enjoyable performances, to make dance especially for Wales’ children.

How?

This December at the Dance House Cardiff, NDCWales are performing a 45 minute show named ‘Zoetrope’ which is inspired by early animation and the spirit of the fairground. The stage will be flooded with illusions and exhilarating movement patterns performed by magical creatures. The event will be a visually exciting, inspirational and enriching experience for learners aged 7-11.

The show lasts one hour and we are performing schools shows on:

17, 18, 19 April 2024 11am-12pm

and

23, 24, 25 April 2024 11am-12pm

What is a Zoetrope?

A zoetrope is a pre-film animation device that produce the illusion of motion by displaying a sequence of drawings or photographs showing progressive phases of that motion.

a series of images showing stages of movement from a dancer in a red costume

How else?

Teachers attending Zoetrope will be provided with resource packs including lesson plans, to use before and after the performance so that young people can attend with confidence and discuss their thoughts afterwards.

Resource packs will be available to work into various subjects such as P.E., English, Welsh, Art, Science and History so that you need not find time for additional activity.

Teachers looking to incorporate more dance into their Expressive Arts lessons can also book a workshop in your school taught by NDCWales’ dance experts.

But how much does it cost?

We want to make dance affordable for all, and tickets are just £6 per person with a teacher for each 10 children booking.

We also have a special workshop package on a first come, first served basis:
£375 includes up to 30 tickets to a performance of Zoetrope plus an exclusive hour long workshop here at the Dance House after the show from 1-2pm, or at your school on a date to suit you.

However, the Arts Council of Wales will cover up to 90% of the cost of attending.

The Arts Council of Wales Go & See grant can provide funding for both tickets and travel to high-quality arts events – you’ll just need to sign up and apply – NDCWales can help guide you through this process.
