Three, top international dance shows to be performed at National Dance Company Wales’ Cardiff hub, the Dance House, this Spring

While the company itself is on a UK-wide Spring Tour, Artistic Director Caroline Finn has invited three contemporary dance shows – all choreographed by women – to perform in Spring@DanceHouse, NDCWales’ spring season at the Dance House, Cardiff Bay.

Featuring two one-woman shows (one from Cuba, the other from the UK), and one duet by two Swiss dancers aged 65+, Spring@DanceHouse brings some of the best and most innovative contemporary dance to the Welsh capital in April and May.

Lui & Artemis by Swiss dance company Prototype Status is a gloriously moving piece performed by two dancers aged over 65, and follows the paradoxical journey of an elderly couple who feel younger at heart in their now worn-out bodies than they could have ever been during their first embrace.

Their minds are simultaneously turned towards the past and the future, whilst their bodies are stuck in the present. They are the sum of what they have lived.

Lui & Artemis will be performed as part of Gwanwyn festival in association with Age Cymru.

Describing Lui & Artemis, Caroline Finn, Artistic Director of NDCWales said: “Having seen several of Jasmine Morand’s creations for Prototype Status, I have been particularly struck by Lui & Artemis. Both performers are mature artists who have enjoyed successful careers as professional dancers; this duet oozes honesty, beauty and sensitivity.”

Pitch by Scottish-based Skye Reynolds and Cardiff-based Jo Fong comes to Wales following a sell-out run at last year’s Edinburgh Festival Fringe, and is described by the artists as Stand Up Dance. Inspired by a fresh, conversational style, Pitch is a one-woman show that exposes a personal but witty story of avoiding and taking action, asking how to be a woman, how to change the world, how to take a stance.

Jo is a former NDCWales rehearsal director, and is now one of Wales’ most successful dance artists.

Describing Pitch, Caroline Finn said: “I saw Jo Fong’s work soon after I moved to Cardiff and found it engaging, ambitious and hysterically funny. She has a special talent for connecting with her audiences and making them think, feel and question their perceptions. This piece, which she made with Skye Reynolds, is about as relevant and timely as you can get – a fresh and frank interrogation of how women take a stand in a bitter political climate.”

The Request Show is produced by German-based dance company The Cooperativa Maura Morales and performed by Cuban dancer and choreographer Maura Morales, with music composed by Michio Woirgardt. This piece juxtaposes the despair of real life with a dream world full of imagery, and creates a different life beyond the restrictions of everyday existence. It is inspired by playwright Franz Xaver Kroetz’ 1971 piece Wunschkonzert, which describes a woman who has lost her speech in the loneliness and monotony of her daily life.

Describing The Request Show, Caroline Finn said: “Maura has one of the most unique and virtuosic movement languages that I’ve had the pleasure to witness on stage; she manages to successfully combine irony, pathos and sheer athleticism in all her works. I’m also fascinated by her collaboration with composer and husband Michio Woirgardt. Together they create physical and musical landscapes in which audiences can really lose themselves.”

National Dance Company Wales’ core dancers are currently mid-way through their UK-wide Spring tour, in which they perform two works; Profundis by internationally renowned, Israeli-born choreographer Roy Assaf, and The Green House; a brand new piece by the company’s artistic director, Caroline Finn. Alongside these performances, the company will also host several (mostly free) events and activities.

The Spring tour will be performed at Theatr Brycheiniog in Brecon (13-14 March), Dance City, Newcastle (18-19 March), Theatr Clwyd, Mold (25-26 April), Sherman Theatre, Cardiff (28-29 April), Torch Theatre, Milford Haven (3 May) and Dundee Rep, Dundee (13 May).
