National Dance Company Wales to present a vibrant repertoire for their Autumn Tour

 MEDIUM_AT.jpg

Following performances at Green Man Festival, Crickhowell and Sziget Festival, Budapest this summer, the award-winning National Dance Company Wales are in preparations for their forthcoming Autumn Tour entitled Folk with performances in Bangor, Birmingham, Newtown and Cardiff during September and November. The tour will feature three thrilling works at each venue created by some of the most exciting European choreographers today.

Folk is the headline piece to be performed at each tour venue. Created by National Dance Company Wales’ Artistic Director Caroline Finn, Folk features darkly comic expressions of life and people, using Finn’s quirky choreographic style. Exploring themes of social dynamics, characters in familiar and surreal scenes come alive to an eclectic and enchanting musical landscape. Performed alongside Folk is They Seek to Find the Happiness They Seem by NDCWales’ Rehearsal Director Lee Johnston; a heart wrenching exploration of the separation and disconnection within a relationship, a touching duet set to music by Max Richter.

Tuplet is the third dance in the programme for Bangor and Birmingham. Created by Alexander Ekman, Tuplet is a witty and high octane exploration of the simple notion of rhythm. The dancers’ breath and bodies create a powerful drumming soundtrack, combined with pounding electronic accompaniment as well as the familiar and evocative jazz sounds of Fly Me to the Moon. This fierce physicality combines with joyful, carefree dance that really shows off the personality of each of the Company dancers. Ekman is well known for his fast paced timing and humour, creating work that anyone can relate to and connect with.

Profundis will be a brand new work for NDCWales by award winning Israeli choreographer Roy Assaf and also his first UK production. Inspired by the chorale of De Profundis composed by Estonian composer Arvo Pärt, Profundis will premiere in Newtown and then be performed in Cardiff, forming a triple-bill with Folk and They Seek to Find the Happiness They Seem for the November run of NDCWales’ Autumn Tour.

As well as being the title piece for the Autumn Tour, NDCWales have been selected to peform Folk at Tanzmesse International Festival in Germany on 1 September, the largest professional gathering dedicated exclusively to contemporary dance.

In addition to the performances, NDCWales will be interacting with groups in the community including a bilingual Family Interactive Matinee in Bangor (in partnership with Dawns i Bawb) where families can take part in activities with the dancers on stage and watch a performance of Tuplet. And in Newtown, school children will be able to take part in dance and enjoy a matinee performance of Folk. The Company dancers also visit schools, community groups and local dance groups prior to the performances, creating opportunities for people to take part and get dancing, and inspiring future generations of dancers.

NDCWales Artistic Director, Caroline Finn said “I am incredibly excited to be bringing back three such well received works which feel very close to the Company's heart and to be sharing these with existing as well as new audiences. Roy Assaf's new work will be a fantastic complement to our current repertoire and will give audiences another flavour to relish! We are also hugely looking forward to performing Folk at Tanzmesse International Festival in Düsseldorf this summer. As the largest professional gathering dedicated exclusively to contemporary dance we feel sure that our presence there will bring us new and exciting touring opportunities for the future.”

Complementing the tour are NDCWales’ new evening classes at the company’s  home and venue, the Dance House, at Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff. The classes are for people of any dance ability (age 18+) who can sign up to try Beginners Ballet,  Beginners Contemporary Dance, Yoga Dance, Yoga  or Gaga/people, a free flowing movement language created by choreographer Ohad Naharin.

NDCWales Chief Executive Paul Kaynes adds “This new element to our programme has been really successful and has meant that some people have engaged with the Company for the first time. They now have the dance and movement bug and see the benefits and enjoyments that dance can bring into people’s lives.”
