Wales Online, Review: Alternative Routes, Dance House, Cardiff

National Dance Company Wales has had a good year as far as birthday celebrations go, writes Betti Hunter.

After celebrating its 30th birthday in March, the company has crafted five new pieces of work which is being exclusively premiered at the Dance House – based at the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff – as part of the ongoing festivities.

For Alternative Routes the company has also joined forces with the creative talent at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, whose innovative set design brings big-stage magic to the diminutive theatre.

First on the bill was rookie choreographer Gareth Mole with his first professional solo composition endure.

Accompanied only by a live cellist, Mole writhed his way through an untamed, unhinged physical exploration of professional ‘networking’ rules. His enthusiastic posturing and handshaking replicated the stilted desperation of 21st century career climbers to perfection. He may lack the experience on paper, but if Mole continues to develop work of this calibre and complexity we can expect great things.

Dissenting murmurs flitted around the audience when they were asked to vacate their seats and stand around the dimly-lit stage for Mattieu Geffre’s Chorale, but a stunned silence soon fell when seven androgynous creatures crept into the light and stared accusingly at the assembled spectators.

Disjointed glitches and vacant expressions lent the ensemble an otherworldly appearance before a ceremonial disrobing revealed central dancer Lee Johnson’s all too human vulnerabilities.

Johnson herself has already cemented her reputation as a producer of cutting-edge choreography with previous works Purlieus and Calamine Joy. Her latest offering They Seek To Find The Happiness They Seem is no less accomplished, but the pared down duet was in danger of being lost among the more theatrical productions on the bill.

A similar fate was dodged by Matteo Marfoglia, whose subtly powerful Crossing Paths showcased the individual strengths of the company dancers alongside the remarkable costumes of designer Marija Mihajlovic.

The highlight of the night was Chris Scott’s tragic-comic Encore, an eccentric tale of two grotesque vaudevillian old-timers with painted faces and twisted grins. Though not to everyone’s tastes – a number of audience members looked visibly shaken when faced with Camille Giraudeau’s manic grimace – Scott’s masterpiece served as a timely reminder of NDCW’s ongoing commitment to producing ground-breaking work.
