Older groups across Wales to perform at Gwanwyn Dance Night as part of Age Cymru’s Gwanwyn Festival

National Dance Company Wales’ are thrilled to present the first Gwanwyn Dance Night on Saturday 21 May, at the Dance House, Wales Millennium Centre, in partnership with Age Cymru, Striking Attitudes and Rubicon to celebrate older people and the joy of dance.

During the month of May, Age Cymru’s annual Gwanwyn Festival celebrates creativity in older age, offering a huge variety of activities for older people across Wales.  For the first time, the home of National Dance Company Wales, The Dance House will be celebrating the variety of older peoples dance groups from across Wales and the joy dance brings in uniting everyone.

On Saturday 21 May, 6.30pm you can see a mixture of 6 professional and community groups perform at the home of National Dance Company Wales. Over the 60 minutes there will be a variety of performances and pieces in development. Opening the evening will be Striking Attitudes, a professional company that works with older professional and community performers, who will be showing a few extracts from their new piece in development Cradle. There will be professional performances from North Wales’ Dawns I Bawb with a  solo performance by Betsan Llwyd; an intergenerational piece performed by Newport’s Rubicon Dance/ NuWave; members from Rhondda Fach Reminiscence Performing Arts Group performing a piece inspired by Hawys James poem, Memories / Atgofian; Neath Port Talbot’s TAN Dance group Tystion will be performing In Spinnig Light and  there will also be a short excerpt from Mike Pearson’s memorable dance piece from Cardiff Dance Festival, We Bring Good News from the Future.

Age Cymru’s Emma Robinson said, “We are thrilled that we are able to showcase so many different pieces on 21 May from many different groups across Wales. We have some wonderful pieces to be seen including an intergenerational piece around the theme of motherhood by Rubicon and the rare chance to see a piece in development by Striking Attitudes and an opportunity for you to talk about it.”

But its not just about the performance on 21 May. During the daytime participants performing at the Gwanwyn Dance Night will have the opportunity to have workshops with National Dance Company Wales’ professional dancers and hear about new projects coming up by freelance independent artist Sean Tuan John and working with older people in Wales.

National Dance Company Wales’ Artistic Director, Caroline Finn said, “We are really proud to host the Gwanwyn Dance Night at our home the Dance House, and to celebrate the joy of dance. We all dance: for pleasure, for fun, on our own, in groups or maybe only when no one else is watching. At National Dance Company Wales we truly believe that dance is for everyone and we can’t wait to see the variety of pieces being shared on this evening.

The Gwanwyn Dance Night will be held at the Dance House, Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff Bay on Saturday 21 May 6.30pm. Tickets are £7, concessions £5 plus booking fee. Tickets much be purchased in advance through www.ndcwales.co.uk / 029 2063 6464.
