National Dance Company Wales to perform at European and Welsh Festivals for the first time this Summer

Award-winning National Dance Company Wales presents work by some of the most celebrated international choreographers alongside creations by exciting new Wales-based talent. This summer, the company will be breaking out of the studio to perform at three music and dance festivals across Wales and Europe, showcasing its work on an international stage.

National Dance Company Wales will be performing at Sziget Festival, Budapest in early August, a 7-day multicultural festival which boasts acts such as Muse, The Chemical Brothers and Tinie Tempah as well as a full arts and culture programme. The company then travels on to premiere a new outdoor piece at Green Man festival, Crickhowell, which is the first time NDCWales has been involved in the Welsh festival’s performing arts line up. And to end the summer, the company appears at Tanzmesse International Festival, the largest professional gathering dedicated exclusively to contemporary dance in Düsseldorf, Germany.

NDCWales will be performing two current repertoire pieces at Sziget in Budapest, Hungary on 12 August, A Mighty Wind and Tuplet. Alexander Ekman’s Tuplet is a witty and high octane exploration of the simple notion of rhythm. Tuplet was originally performed by Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet, and now National Dance Company Wales is the only European company to perform this piece. A Mighty Wind by Jeroen Verbruggen was created with NDCWales last year and is a high energy, vibrant piece that captures the intensity of nature’s elements during a storm, set against the power generated by a rock music concert.

The company returns home to perform for the first time at Green Man festival, Crickhowell, Wales on 20 & 21 August premiering its new festival piece for the outdoors, Animatorium. Created by Artistic Director Caroline Finn, Animatorium is a comic piece with dark undertones, featuring a central Master character that animates and manipulates a troupe of dancers. Full of theatricality and humour, Animatorium will form part of the company’s repertoire for future festival and outdoor performances.

NDCWales will also be peforming its new piece Folk by Caroline Finn at Tanzmesse International Festival in Germany on 1 September. Folk features darkly comic expressions of life and people, using Finn’s quirky choreographic style. Exploring themes of social dynamics, characters in familiar and surreal scenes come alive to an eclectic and enchanting musical landscape.

NDCWales Artistic Director, Caroline Finn said “These are fantastic opportunities for the company and we are thrilled that we have the chance to perform at Green Man festival here in Wales and especially to be able to bring our work to audiences who are new to dance. We aim to change perceptions of contemporary dance as something which only happens in theatres; by taking it into these festival arenas we want to give people new experiences of dance and show them how engaging it can be. And we are really excited to be taking the cultural name of Wales overseas by performing to international audiences at Sziget and Tanzmesse this summer. We were overwhelmed by the response to our performance in March at British Dance Edition in Cardiff and this has really helped with showcasing NDCWales and the quality of dance coming from Wales.”
