National Dance Company Wales and Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama inspires the next generation of choereograghers and designers through Alternative Routes

National Dance Company Wales and Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama is supporting the next generation of choreographers and designers to create new works of dance as part of its annual artists development programme, Alternative Routes. This year it will also feature as part of the Festival of Voice season.

The successful Alternative Routes programme has been running at the Dance House for over 10 years, nurturing the dancers of National Dance Company Wales to develop and explore their choreographic ideas together with design students from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. At the end of the month long creation process, audiences have the chance to see these new pieces performed as part of a full evening of dance at the home of National Dance Company Wales, the Dance House, Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff from 9-11 June.

Ahead of the performance dates NDCWales is opening up rehearsal sessions for audiences to share in the creative process. Taking place at the Dance House from 6pm-7pm each Wednesday from 18 May – 1 June in the lead up to the season’s performance, each session will provide audiences with the chance to watch the progress of the week, ask choreographers questions and give feedback on the work and how it’s developing.

As part of the Cardiff wide Festival of Voice programme, this year, three budding choreographers have been given the opportunity to develop their ideas inspired by the theme of ‘Voices’. Matteo Marfoglia, Camille Giraudeau and Josef Perou will each create works exploring the themes of voices in dance, ranging from a male voice choir, to the voices in our heads, to an inability to speak, and to the physical reactions of the body when it hears the emotional sound waves of conversation.

As well as seeing three exciting new works of dance, this year the programme will be taking a new direction and will also include two pieces that were created for similar choreographic platforms. Platforms that launched the careers of many choreographers. Former company member Eleesha Drennan’s Whiskers, was originally created through Alternative Routes and toured with NDCWales several years ago and this year it will be performed at Alternative Routes by dancer Camille Giraudeau.  Artistic Director, Caroline Finn will present her solo performance, Bernadette, for the first time in the UK. Bernadette was created in 2009 as part of Ballet Preljocaj's choreographic platform for dancers.

National Dance Company Wales’ Artistic Director, Caroline Finn said; “I am incredibly passionate about giving dancers an opportunity to develop their own choreographic voices and a project such as this is very close to my heart.  If it weren't for opportunities such as Alternative Routes, then I wouldn’t have had the chance to grow as a choreographer and would likely not be where I am today. Finding your own language is extremely exciting and, as a dancer, enables you to be even more generous, inspiring and challenging for other choreographers! Alternative Routes is a really exciting partnership with the Royal College of Music of Drama, which has helped develop the skills of many dancers, choreographers and designers over the years.  It’s an exciting process to watch from beginning to the end and we warmly invite audiences to join us on this journey and come along to the open rehearsals and then to watch their Voices themed pieces.”

The three featured choreographers, who are all professional dancers with the Company, will collaborate with industry partners including set, costume and lighting design students from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.

Sean Crowley, Director of Drama at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama said “Alternative Routes has been a part of the postgraduate design course for over 10 years. This collaboration with National Dance Company Wales has been the starting point for many of the design industries leading young practitioners. It is a course of continued excitement and collaborative practice of the highest order. We are delighted annually to join with NDCW to produce such innovative and exciting performances.”

Alternative Routes 2016 will be part of the Festival of Voice programme at the Dance House, Wales Millennium Centre, with performances from 9-11 June.  Find out more at www.ndcwales.co.uk
